Staff Profile

My name is Matt Elliott, and I am delighted to be the iLab instructor at Westgate. I have been teaching for seven years in different learning spaces from outdoor education to traditional classrooms. I received my MA in Teaching from the University of Colorado, Denver in 2021 and my BA in Environmental Studies from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 2016.

A recent success I had with my students was partnering with Trout in the classroom and Colorado Parks and wildlife to release 30 trout into the Platte River as a restoration effort and educating other Coloradans on the importance of clean water. I aim to have students discuss, develop, create, and present solutions to problems that impact ourselves and our greater community.

Outside of education I enjoy spending time listening to my record collection, adventuring with my wife—Aly— and my new dog—Conway, and watching old movies.

Chickens are great companions. They have many needs that need to be met so that they can produce eggs and live happy lives. How can we, as 3rd/4th grade students, design a coop that meets their needs, helps those who tend to the chickens, and adds beauty to the surrounding environment?

Week 1: Routines, Expectations, Define and empathize with our problem

Week 2: Plan designs for improved Chicken coop, prepare presentation and present to local chicken expert.

Week 3: Reflection of coop designs. Research Chicken health and illness with local chicken expert.

Week 4: Design Chicken coop first aid kits that can help both chickens and their human caretakers. Learn basic first aid for small cuts and injuries.
