OCTOBER ADVOCACY FOCUS: Using Your Voice & Bully Prevention
This month, our focus is on using your voice and bully prevention. Everyone can share their voice to prevent bullying. Whether you’re a student, educator, parent, or community member. Some key things to think about.
- A focus on preventing bullying is important, as is promoting positive actions such as kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
- Bullying affects witnesses as well as targets. Those who witness bullying often report feeling unsafe, helpless, and afraid that they will be the next target.
- Students who bully others can also be negatively affected by the behavior with higher rates of physical and emotional health issues.
- Bullying is not only devastating while it’s happening; research shows that the negative effects can last a lifetime.
- Students can be especially effective in bullying intervention. It’s important for adults to encourage youth to be supportive of anyone experiencing bullying and to educate youth on how to advocate for themselves and for others.
- Everyone’s actions matter; we all have a role to play in bullying prevention. Our message to others is stronger when we are united by the common principle that bullying is never acceptable.

GENERAL SCHOOL & CLASSROOM INFO
SCHOOL POOL
SchoolPool is a great resource finding a carpool with other Westgate families; however, did you know that you can use it to connect for many great opportunities?
The more families that register, the more likely you are to find good matches! So register with our link today to get started!
Westgate specific link: https://mywaytogo.org/#/schoolpools/join/581b49017b12dd7876218af4
- Arrange a carpool with parents in your neighborhood — you would be amazed at how many Westgate families may live near you!
- Temporary or permanent help with transportation — for when you know you’re going to be late for pickup time or if you are in need of more regular transportation options.
- Arrange walking or biking groups — drop of kids at a shared location and let them walk as a group or design a bike route that can stop by locations where students can join. Great for safer transportation and skipping the car line!
- Get to know each other — contact the parents on the list and arrange a meet-up, game night, BBQ, or a fun get-together.
- Advertise babysitting services — great for finding help for breaks, days off, or evenings out! And a great opportunity for High School students (or adults) to earn extra money!
- Share resources — have a need for items, have an abundance? Share resources among trusted Westgate families. Great for passing on Westgate class shirts and other items to younger students in need!
If you are interested in participating, you will need to take the initiative to contact families to determine interest and make arrangements. Your information will only be shared with participating Westgate families. No one else will ever see your information unless you elect to share your information with families at other schools.
Add comments to indicate special requests or preferences, such as “can provide morning rides in exchange for afternoon rides,” “ride needed for student in after-school activities,” or “looking for a walk buddy in the mornings.” The more information you can provide, the easier it is to make the right connections!

WESGATE WILD HALL OF FAME - Logan Hopson
Let’s get to know our 2025 Colorado Teacher of the Year nominee
What inspired you to become a teacher, and how has that inspiration evolved over your career?
I was studying music in college and had a professor who, after hearing me explain a new concept to a fellow student, told me I’d make a great teacher. Up to that point, I hadn’t decided what to do with my music degree. I had great respect for that professor, so that inspired me to be a music teacher.

Can you share a memorable moment from your teaching journey that deeply impacted you or your students.
An 8th grade student asked me for a recommendation to get accepted into our high school and they mentioned how my class brought them out of their depression by helping them come “out of their shell”. That has always stayed with me.
If you could teach any other subject or grade level for a day, what would it be and why?
History. I’ve always loved history.
What's one unique teaching method or activity you've implemented in your classroom that you've found particularly effective or enjoyable?
Rhythm Basketball - it combines clapping and counting rhythms with a game in which students throw a ball into a bin. They get very competitive!
Outside of teaching, what are some hobbies or interests that you're passionate about, and how do they influence your approach to education?
I’m passionate about cars and mechanics. The level of problem-solving and perseverance that it takes has influenced my teaching.

Reflecting on your own school experiences, what's one piece of advice you wish you could give to your younger self or to current students?
Enjoy every moment, good or bad, as they will shape your character. Don’t sweat the little things.
