Math 8 Class Update: Week of 10/14/2024

 
Hello Everyone! Welcome back from fall break! This week we are diving into our third unit of the year, covering angles and triangles. We will be primarily focused on the relationships of angles created by intersecting lines as well as the relationships of angles both on the interior and exterior of triangles. With all that being said, we have four assignments which students will be responsible for this week; The Course Progress Assessment(Monday & Tuesday), the Sections 3.1-3.2 Quiz, this week's notes, and the Week 9 Homework. The homework is due on this coming Monday 10/21/2024 and consists of 20 problems. The first 5 problems are review from the previous quarter, the next 5 problems will cover material taught on Wendesday, and the remaining 10 will be covered on Thursday and Friday. 

Math 8 Class Update (Week of 9/23/2024)

Hello All! This week, we will conclude our study of chapter 2: Transformations. We will spend the first two days of the week preparing for our test, on Wednesday we will test, and Thursday will be spent in advocacy activities. Students will be responsible for two assignments this week; the Chapter 2 test and the week 8 homework (24 problems or 8 per-night if completed in equal measurements on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights.). At the end of this week, we will have parent teacher conferences and then we will be on our fall break!

Math 8 - Class Update (Week of 9/16/2024)

Hello All, This week, our students will continue in their study of transformations as we dive deeper in the subject matter, exploring changes in area and composite shapes within the coordinate plane. Students will be responsible for three assignments this week. Their weekly homework(twenty-four problems, due on Monday 9/23), their weekly notes (Friday 9/20), and the sections 2.5-2.7 quiz which will be taken on Wednesday  9/18. This week is also important as it is the end of the grading window for quarter one. Please remember that all late and missing assignments are due on Wednesday 9/18/2024.

Math 8 Class Update: Week of 9/9/2024

Hello All! This week, we will be continuing our study of transformations. We will start the week by identifying the types of transformations that fall into the category of "rigid motion". Then, we will start to study dilations, which scale up and down the size of figures. We will have a quiz on the beginning sections of chapter 2 on Tuesday, this week's notes will be due on Friday, and the homework for this week will consist of thirty problems (broken out to between five and six problems per night if completed in equal segments). As we come to the end of the first quarter, we are working to bolster our students' academic fortitude and stamina to adequately prepare them for their high school experience.

Math 8 Class Update: Week of 8/26/2024

Hello Parents! 
 
This week, our eight graders will be finishing out the first chapter in our curriculum. This chapter has covered equations of various types and gave our students exposure to solving for unknown variables both purely in terms of numbers and in terms of other variables. Once we've finished chapter one, we will end the week with a brief introduction to chapter two. Covering rudimentary geometry within the coordinate plane. Specifically how to translate or "shift" figures in the coordinate plane. This week, students will be responsible for a total of three assignments; The Chapter 1 Test, this week's homework, and this week's in-class notes. 

Math 8 Class update: Week of 8/19/2024

Hello All, 
 
During this third week of the year, our eighth grade students will be focusing their attention and energy on sections 1.3 and 1.4 of our curriculum. These sections will still be covering simple equations, but we will be adding on variables to both sides of our equations. This progressive dial up of complexity helps students build familiarity with the tools available to them and provides a platform for them to reflect on skills from previous years as we build into more complex material. Homework for this week will be due next Monday, notes will be turned in on Friday, and we will have a short quiz on the aforementioned sections on Thursday.

A 'Hello' to Parents of 7th and 8th students

Dear Parents, 

 

I can’t express my excitement to dive into this school year, to develop relationships with each of you, and to help foster your student’s learning and love of math throughout the year. While I’m certain this isn’t new information to you, the parent-teacher relationship is key in ensuring the quality of your students’ education. For this reason, I am making it my goal to keep consistent communication with all of you throughout this year. Along with this letter I will be giving each of you some helpful instructions on how you can access your student’s Microsoft teams dashboard and Big Ideas Math account to keep up to date with assignments, grades, and assessments throughout this year. You will be able to access online textbooks, view assignments, monitor homework, access my notes and the slides I use in class, and make use of a wide library of extra practice resources from these two platforms. In addition, I would recommend downloading both our Westgate school app and the Infinite campus app (available on apple and android). These will allow you to get updates about community events from the school and notifications for grades as they are uploaded, missing or late work, and for field trips and events. Math 8 Class Update: Week of 8/12/2024

Hello Parents!
 
During this second week of the school year, we will be having a relatively eventful week. Due to last week's plumbing issues, students will first be finishing their pre-course test on Monday and then we will have our fall MAPS tests for reading and math on Thursday and Friday respectively. Even with all of this happening, throughout the three remaining class periods our students will spend in my classroom they will begin their annual mathematical journey with a study expressions and variables. We study these as a precursor to equations, and as a refresher from the short time we spent on this topic during their seventh grade year. During this week, I will also be focused on teaching students note taking, thinking strategies, and organization of assignments so as to help foster their success in the future.
