Month of March

Greetings 7/8 families!

For the month of March, our Advocacy theme will be mindfulness. When we think about the previous themes that we have uncovered in Advocacy, mindfulness ties them all together. Practicing mindfulness can help manage stress, improve focus and concentration, better understand our emotions, regulate our behavior, and develop coping mechanisms for challenges we face, ultimately leading to improved academic performance and overall well-being.

  • Middle School Book Fair: March 3rd - 6th
    • March 3rd and 4th 3:30-5pm, March 5th 3:30-5:30pm, March 6th 8am-12pm, and during student lunchtime

Month of February

Hello 7/8 Families!

February is the month of Empathy and Kindness at Westgate, and our seventh and eighth graders will be focusing on developing these skills through various lessons and activities. Empathy is the ability to put yourself in someone’s shoes and understand what they are going through; it’s the ability to feel what they are feeling.  Empathetic people can connect with others on a deeper level and can lead to individuals being helpful, involved and invested in other people. Kindness plays an important part in showing empathy. When we are kind, we are engaging in that “tunning in phase” where we can pay attention and try to understand someone else’s experience or emotions.

Events

  1. Kindness Week:  Feb 10-14, 2025
  2. 7/8 Kindness Card delivery to Thornton and Northglenn Police Departments: Friday, February 14th (Please look for the permission form sent by your student’s Advocacy teacher)
  3. 7th Grade field trip to Snow School: Thursday, February 20th

Kindness Week Reminders:

  • We do not exchange Valentines cards, candy, or treats at school. If your student arrives with Valentine’s cards, candy, or treats, they will be asked to put them back into their backpack to be taken home.
  • Get your Kindness Day permission slip (virtually emailed to families) signed by Wednesday February 12th. Classes will be walking to different nearby businesses to deliver hand-made kindness cards to local businesses on Friday, February 14th. We do not need any chaperones for these trips.
  • Be prepared to go rain or shine on Friday, February 14th (half day) – bring a warm jacket, gloves, beanies, etc. If needed because we will be walking outside.

Here’s a list of things that you can do to support your student’s learning at home.

Monday, February 10th: Words of Affirmation

Kindness Week Challenge #1 – Use kind words of affirmation with 3 or more other people you see today. It could be a family member, friend, teacher, grocery store worker, or anyone else. Set aside a few minutes daily where each person gives a positive word or phrase to another family member.

Kindness Week Challenge #2 – Spend at least 30 minutes of quality time with yourself or someone you love today after school. Have a family game night, movie or show night, cook or bake something as a family, enjoy story time, crafts, exercise, or even some yard work together.

Wednesday, February 12th: Acts of Service

Kindness Week Challenge #3 – Do another act of service for someone when you get home! Cook a meal for the family, organize a shared space, help each other with chores, plan a relaxation evening, do a surprise improvement project, or care for a pet together.

Thursday, February 13th: Gift Giving

Kindness Week Challenge #4: Deliver the gift you made today in class to the person you made it for. Talk about how giving someone a gift made you feel. Dedicate an evening to creating homemade gifts for each other, create a family shared photo album, playlist, or video.

Reminders for the new year, new semester, and new quarter:

However, should your student bring their phone to school, they will have to store it in their classroom lockbox for the duration of the school day. Per district policy, if a student is found to have their phone on them throughout the day, consequences will progress as follows:
    • 1st Offense: Device is confiscated, parents are notified, device is returned to the student at end of the day after reviewing the electronics policy
    • 2nd Offense: Device is confiscated, transferred to the front desk, parents are notified, and the device may only be released to parents/guardians of the student.
    • 3rd Offense: Device is confiscated, transferred to the front desk, parents are notified, the device may only be released to your parents, and you may receive a suspension of at least one day(to be served in or out of school).
    • Further Offenses: Offenses beyond the third, result in the consequences outlined in the ‘3rd Offense’ section. However, the duration of the student’s suspension will increase until it reaches the maximum of three days.
  • Pod Expectations(slight change): Starting at the beginning of the second semester, the 7/8 pod is open for test taking/make up, quiet individual or small group work, and individual breaks as needed. However, students must have permission from their teacher to be in the pod at any given time.
  • Grade Checks: Please make sure to keep up with grades and recent assignments in Infinite Campus which can be accessed through the Infinite Campus Website or app. Additionally, students are given time on Fridays during Advocacy to write and send to you a brief update on their week at school as well as an outline of their current academic standing as well as recent events. Please reach out to your child’s advocacy teacher if you are not receiving these emails.

Thanks, and reach out if you need anything!

Advocacy December - Generosity

Dear Westgate Families,

As we enter the month of December, we are reminded of the spirit of generosity that fills the air during this special time of year. At Westgate, we believe that this is a perfect opportunity to reflect on how we can embody the theme of Generosity both in our actions and our hearts.

Generosity is not only about giving material things, but also about offering kindness, time, and support to those in need. It’s about extending a helping hand to those around us, whether through small acts of kindness or larger charitable efforts. This month, we encourage all of our students, families, and staff to reflect on how we can show generosity in our everyday lives—at school, at home, and in our communities.

To inspire this spirit, we will be organizing several initiatives in Advocacy that will allow our school community to give back and make a positive impact within our own Westgate family. We hope that each of you will find meaningful ways to practice generosity during this month.

Whether you choose to donate to a local charity, share your time with others, or simply offer a kind word to someone in need, remember that every act of generosity, no matter how small, can make a big difference.

Thank you for your continued support and for helping to foster a culture of kindness and giving at Westgate.

Wishing you all a joyful and generous holiday season!

Warm regards,

Mrs. Haupt

October Advocacy

Greetings Advocacy Families!

October Advocacy Focus: Using Your Voice & Bully Prevention

This month, our focus is on using your voice and bully prevention. Everyone can share their voice to prevent bullying. Whether you’re a student, educator, parent, or community member. Some key things to think about.

  • A focus on preventing bullying is important, as is promoting positive actions such as kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
  • Bullying affects witnesses as well as targets. Those who witness bullying often report feeling unsafe, helpless, and afraid that they will be the next target.
  • Students who bully others can also be negatively affected by the behavior with higher rates of physical and emotional health issues.
  • Bullying is not only devastating while it’s happening; research shows that the negative effects can last a lifetime.
  • Students can be especially effective in bullying intervention. It’s important for adults to encourage youth to be supportive of anyone experiencing bullying and to educate youth on how to advocate for themselves and for others.
  • Everyone’s actions matter; we all have a role to play in bullying prevention. Our message to others is stronger when we are united by the common principle that bullying is never acceptable.

September Advocacy

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This month, our focus is on Self-Awareness, a key part of our advocacy efforts. Through various activities and lessons, your child will develop essential skills like recognizing their emotions, understanding their strengths and challenges, and learning how their actions impact themselves and others. These skills are crucial for their personal growth and success, both in and out of the classroom. We encourage you to engage in conversations at home about what they’re learning to reinforce these important concepts.

The following topics will be covered throughout the month of September during advocacy classes--
  • Emotional Awareness: Recognizing and understanding their own emotions, which helps in managing reactions and building empathy for others.
  • Self-Reflection: Developing the habit of thinking about their actions, decisions, and behaviors, and how these affect themselves and others.
  • Strengths and Weaknesses Identification: Recognizing their strengths to build confidence and understanding areas for growth to set realistic goals.
  • Goal Setting: Learning to set personal and academic goals based on their self-assessment, and developing a plan to achieve them.
  • Self-Regulation: Developing the ability to manage impulses, stay focused, and persevere through challenges.

August Advocacy

Welcome to the 2024-2025 School Year!!!
It is my pleasure to be a part of the Westgate family this year.  I look forward to working together as a team to ensure our students are successful this year.
For the month of August, our focus will be R.I.S.E which stands for:
Respect
Integrity
Safety
Empathy

Every month I will updating the Edlio post for Advocacy with the theme for the month and communicating with you about special events or activities that will be occurring for the month.

ZERO WASTE WEDNESDAY is back this year.

What this means is that if students have a lunch that doesn’t use any waste AT ALL (i.e. nothing to throw away, like baggies, cans, plastic cups, lunch bags, etc.) then they will receive a stamp on their hand from the Zero Hero Team.

Students who have school lunch will qualify if they accurately sort their lunch into the appropriate bins – trash and recycling.

We encourage families to start the conversation about alternatives to lunch waste, like glass or plastic lunch containers, reusable lunch bags and water bottles, and cloth napkins. If a student has any item that must be thrown away (at school or at home) then they will not receive a stamp. Hopefully, this will instill good habits at school and at home.  We truly appreciate your efforts.

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me.
