Math Update 10/13/24

This week we will be continuing through chapter 4, "Fluently Add Within 100." Students will be learning a variety of strategies to help them as they learn the most efficient way to add two-digit numbers.

Our math focuses this week:

  • Addition with regrouping. Students will learn the traditional algorithm many of us grew up knowing as, “carrying.” It is now called “Regrouping.”
  • Identifying when regrouping is and is not needed to add.
  • Adding three 2-digit numbers
  • Solving one and two-step word problems involving 2-digit numbers. Two-step word problems continue to be a struggle for many students. The problems are broken down into two individual steps. Students continue to apply strategies they’ve learned to add two addends at each step.
    • Example: “You have 18 acorns and find 19 more. Your friend has 32 acorns. How many acorns do you and your friend have in all?”
      • Step 1: Me: 18 + 19 = 37 (This step is difficult for students because the question is not explicitly stated.)
      • Step 2: Me and my friend: 37 + 32 = 69

Please help your child memorize their single-digit addition facts. This is a critical skill that is needed for mastery by the end of 2nd grade.

If you did not receive math games at Parent-Teacher Conferences, please reach out to me and I will send them home in your child's Friday Folder.

Math Update: 9/23/24 - 9/26/24

This week we will start Chapter 4 which is learning to add fluently within 100. Students will be learning various strategies to help them as they learn the most efficient way to add large numbers.  I will be sending home the parent letters in Friday Folders.

Our math focuses this week:

  • Use partial sums to add. Here is a link to a video that explains this strategy.
  • Addition with regrouping. Students will learn the traditional algorithm many of us grew up knowing as, “carrying.” It is now called “Regrouping.”

Please help your child memorize their single-digit addition facts. This critical skill is needed for mastery by the end of 2nd grade.

Math Update: 9/16/24 - 9/20/24

This week we will be continuing Chapter 3, learning strategies to add within 100. If you would like more information about this chapter, please look for the parent letter that I sent home in Friday Folders. We will take the chapter 3 test on Friday.

Our math focuses this week:

  • Using place value to add
  • Decomposing to add 10s and 1s
  • Using compensation to add
  • Solving addition word problems
Please help your child memorize their single-digit addition facts. This is a critical skill that is needed for mastery by the end of 2nd grade.

Math Update 9/9/24 - 9/13/24

This week we will be finishing Chapter 2 and taking a post-test. Then we will be starting Chapter 3 learning strategies to add and subtract within 100. I will be sending home the parent letter on Friday.

Our math focus this week:

  • Adding 10s and 1s on a number line
  • Using place value to add
  • Decomposing to add 10s and 1s

Math Update: 9/3/24 - 9/6/24

Last week, students learned additional strategies for becoming fluent in their addition fact knowledge. Students learned and practiced the strategies of Doubles Plus or Minus, adding three 1-digit numbers, and Make a Ten to add.

This week, your child will continue to learn strategies for becoming fluent in their addition and subtraction fact knowledge. Students will learn:

  • To relate addition and subtraction by using “fact families.” For example, 4+5=9 and 9-5=4.
  • To get to 10 to subtract. For example, if your child is subtracting 16-9, they can first subtract 16-6 to get to 10, then subtract the remaining 3.
  • Strategies for solving addition and subtraction word problems.

Math Update 8/26/24 - 8/30/24

Math

Last week, we concluded Chapter 1 and began Chapter 2: Fluency and Strategies Within 20. In this chapter, your child will learn strategies to add and subtract numbers within 20. On Friday, we began by learning the commutative property (the students refer to it as “turn around facts”). The commutative property of addition states that the order of numbers being added doesn't matter, and the sum will always be the same. For example, 4+5=9 and 5+4=9.

This week, students will learn additional strategies for becoming fluent in their addition fact knowledge:

  • Doubles Plus or Minus: This strategy shows the students that they can figure out a problem such as 4+5, if they know 4+4. They can think, “4+4+1”
  • Add 3 one-digit numbers: For example, 8+5+2 can be solved by first adding 8+2, then adding the 5.
  • Make a Ten to Add: For example, when adding 8+6, you can think of the six as a 2+4. Then you add the 8+2 to make 10, then add the 4.

Math Update: 8/19/24 - 8/23/24

Last week, we began Chapter 1: Numbers and Arrays. Students learned when a number is odd or even and how to use repeated addition to find the numbers of objects in groups and arrays. The addition lessons addressed adding equal groups of objects.

This week we will conclude Chapter 1 and begin Chapter 2: Fluency and Strategies Within 20. In this chapter, your child will learn strategies to add and subtract numbers within 20. Students will learn to use objects, such as linking cubes, to add and subtract. They will also learn how subtraction is related to addition so they can use addition equations to help solve subtraction problems.

The vocabulary words and phrases associated with this chapter are:

  • Addend
  • Sum
  • Difference
  • Expression
  • doubles plus 1
  • doubles minus 1

Math Update 8/12/24 - 8/16/24

Math

Last week, students took a couple of pre-tests to help me determine some of their skills for the beginning of the year.

This week we will begin "Chapter 1: Numbers and Arrays." Students will learn when a number is odd or even and how to use repeated addition to find the numbers of objects in groups and arrays. The addition lessons address adding equal groups of objects.

A Family Letter from our Big Ideas math curriculum was sent home in your child’s folder. This letter has ideas for supporting your child’s math learning at home and the learning targets and success criteria for this chapter.

Students will be take the NWEA MAPS Math Assessment on Wednesday morning.

Some key vocabulary for this unit is:

  • Even
  • Odd
  • Equal groups
  • Array
  • Column
  • Row
  • Repeated addition
  • equation
