Next week is Earth Week!
Earth Week is May 6th β 10th
Each day has a different advocacy topic and theme, and other days have special events going on.
- Monday, May 6th: Plastic Education Advocacy lesson, Earth Day field day during specials, Clothing collection during PM car line
- Tuesday, May 7th: Your Art, Our Earth advocacy lesson, Clothing collection during PM car line
- Wednesday, May 8th: Take a Simple Act of Green advocacy lesson, Zero Waste and Worksheet Wednesday, Clothing collection during PM car line.
- Thursday, May 9th: The Great Global Cleanup advocacy lesson, Washington Street and School Cleanups, final day for clothing collection
- Friday, May 10th: My Planet, My Closet advocacy lesson, 3:30-5:30 Westgate Clothing Swap.
- Monday, May 13th: Your Art, Our Earth projects due by end of day.

Dear Parent,
The Orton Gillingham Institute is offering Free Summer Tutoring for Students aged 6-13 or in grades 1st-7th.
Tutoring will be provided in 3 cohorts. One in June, one in July and one in August. Each cohort will be 3-4 weeks in length and provided virtually. Each grade will have several classes and will be hosted in the following time zones: EST, CST, MST, PST.
The form for free tutoring will open on April 22nd, 2024 at 10 am EST and will close on May 21st, 2024 at 5 pm EST unless we meet the capacity for submissions before May 21st, 2024.
Based on your address, your child will be added to the corresponding time zone.
You can register up to 3 children in this program. We ask that you only submit 1 application, as multiple submissions may result in your application being removed.

If you have any questions about the Free Summer Tutoring program offered by The Orton Gillingham Institute please reach out to us directly. Your school administration will not be able to answer questions about form submissions and acceptance into the program. Our contact information will be listed at the bottom of this email.
The last day of submission is May 21st, 2024. Children will be placed on a first come, first served basis. We will keep the form open until May 21st, 2024 or until we have reached capacity for submissions. We encourage you to apply early.
During Tutoring the following topics May be Covered:
Phonics
Fluency
Phonemic Awareness
Comprehension
Sentence Writing and Structure
Spelling
Morphology
Expressing Ideas in Writing
Vocabulary and Word knowledge
Syllabication and Syllable Division
And much more.
We specialize in reading intervention and will provide free tutoring covering many of the subjects above.

The students will come in from recess at 12:15 get the lunch, pause, and then at 12:30 we will head outside to view the Eclipse for about 15 minutes. At around 12:45 we will return to our classrooms and finish eating lunch until 1:05.

Westgate has provided glasses for all of the students to view the Eclipse

9:15 - 11:05 - 5th graders will be CMAS science testing with Ms. Calder and Mr. Varela

9:15 - 11:05 - 6th graders will be with Ms. Charlie doing some outdoor education activities

11:05 - 11:45 - we will spend some time with our Advocacy

1:05 - 2:05 - transition to regular ELA class

2:15 - 3:15 - transition to regular Math class

Kindness Week is a long-standing tradition at Westgate. We celebrate and spread kindness by doing different activities throughout the week. Each day has a different theme, aligned with the different love languages. β

- We do not exchange Valentines cards, candy, or treats at school.β
- Get your permission slip signed by Tuesday! At Westgate, we spread kindness by distributing hand-made kindness cards to local businesses on Wednesday, February 14th.β
- Classes will be going to different locations at different times and will return to school afterwards.β
- High school students will chaperone (K-6).β
- Be prepared for Wednesday β bring a warm jacket, gloves, beanies, etc. because we will be walking outside. Be prepared for weather if necessary!β
